Candace Bushnell: Instagram ‘censored’ me

“Sex and the City” scribe Candace Bushnell says she was banned from promoting her new book on Instagram for discussing too much sex.

The author, whose new book, “Is There Still Sex in the City?” is out next month, posted a video in which she discussed the trend of “cubs” — cute young men who date middle-aged women. She put a video — featuring her joking with two younger men, online, without issue. But when she tried to pay to promote the video as an Instagram ad, Bushnell said she was hit with a notice from Instagram that it breached the service’s guidelines on explicit content.

The Instagram message to Bushnell said: “This ad isn’t running because it doesn’t follow our advertising policies. We don’t allow ads that promote adult products or services, such as sex toys, sexual enhancement devices, or sexual videos and publications . . . Ads like these are sensitive in nature and typically evoke a negative reaction from viewers.”

In the clip, Bushnell reads from her book on camera: “It’s a whole new world out there when it comes to middle-aged mating. Take the ‘cubbing’ phenomenon. Cubs are young men in their 20s or early 30s, who are on the prowl for older, sensible women. I call them catnips. They’re Mrs. Robinsons in reverse.”

Bushnell told Page Six: “I made a spoof video with two young men and I tried to promote it with Instagram. Then I get this [notice] . . . I wrote back and said, ‘This is a book written by a 60-year-old woman who takes a funny and poignant look at her own life — not a sex toy!’ ”

The “Sex and the City” creator added: “I’ve been censored! Which makes no sense, because think of all the bikini-clad women you see on Instagram every day.”

Bushnell is further annoyed that she’s applied four times to be verified by the site — and has been denied.

But an Instagram spokesperson told us: “Every week, we review thousands of ads, and at times we make mistakes. This ad was rejected in error and we are sorry. It has since been reinstated.”
