How to make your own laundry lags

Observing the evolution of washing instruments from an old-school washboard to a motorized bell and then to a modern washing machine has been a joy for all those who suffer the constant onslaught of the laundry monster. . As the machines evolve, the products available have been expanded to a dizzying list of options. Instead of an old bar of soap, we got used to powdered detergents, then to liquid detergents and now to detergent pods. How quickly these amenities become necessities. But with convenience comes the cost, so when it comes to laundry lags, why not create your own so you can keep the convenience of an easy laundry aid without the expense? Here's how.

Step 1 – Gather the ingredients

Although all laundry detergents contain the same basic ingredients, you may prefer one component over another. All recipes call for a bar of soap, mostly from Castile or Fels-Naptha. You will also need Borax, Baking Soda and Oxyclean, Baking Soda or Epsom Salt. If you prefer, you can also add essential oils to your favorite fragrance.

Step 2 – Grilled Soap

The fastest way to grate the Fels-Naphtha soap or Castile soap is to chop it and throw it into the blender, where it will break down into a coarse grain powder. Alternatively, you can simply grate the bar using a cheese grater. This method requires a little time, but the soap is easy to grill (in addition, you can consider it as an arm training). Soap is easy to wash from graters or blenders in the dishwasher, so you do not have to worry about lingering flavors or flavors.

Step 3 – Mix dry ingredients

Add baking soda and borax to the soap in a large bowl. Include Oxyclean (or baking soda and / or Epsom salt if you choose these ingredients). Mix the mixture well. Basically, this represents one to three parts of soda lye and one to three parts of borax for a part of soap. You will find below some specific recipes, but know that it is possible to vary according to your needs and your preferences.

Step 4 – Add liquid

The hydrogen peroxide or vinegar will moisten the mixture, helping to keep it together. This is the main difference between DIY powdered laundry detergent and DIY pods. It's this added moisture that allows them to bond and form cubes. Add small amounts of liquid at a time, stirring constantly so that you can see the consistency change with each addition. You want the mixture to hold, but do not get wet.

Step 5 – Forms

Pour about a generous tablespoon into each opening of an ice cube tray or another small similar tray. Press the mixture firmly in place. You will really want to support them for the best results. You can do it with your fingers or use any flat device. Allow the pods to dry overnight or longer.

Step 6 – Remove and use

Once dry, remove the pods from the tray. You can smooth the edges if you prefer. Find a jar or bowl to store your pods (keep them out of the reach of young children) and label them with instructions for other family members. Use a pod the size of an ice cube for each load of laundry.

Step 7 – Fabric Softener

You can use your laundry dispenser in conjunction with the fabric softener of your choice, but you can also create your own liquid softener while playing your muscles. It only takes a few basic ingredients, which you may already have in the house, and omits many of the commercial versions of chemicals. Simply combine two cups of water, two cups of white vinegar and 1/8 cup of glycerine. Pour 1/4 cup of the mixture into the liquid fabric softener section of your washing machine for each load.
