The Russian company Gazprom-Media has announced a film adaptation of Metro 2033, the science fiction novel by Dmitry Glukhovsky, which gave birth to the Metro franchise, which includes a handful of excellent PC shooters.
Filming will begin next year and the film premiere in Russia in 2022, reports Variety. Gazprom-Media has not yet announced the actors and the director.
This is not the first Metro 2033 film planned: MGM was working on a film for two years before being scrapped in December. At the time, Glukhovsky had stated that screenwriter F. Scott Frazier wanted to "Americanize" history by moving the Moscow setting to Washington DC, and it was not working.
Hope this one will have more luck. "In Russia, I have not seen any producer able to do a good job [screen adaptation of] this book. It just seemed impossible, "Glukhovsky told Variety. But now, I've finally met a team that I can entrust to Metro. Our ambitions turned out to be the same: to create a world class blockbuster and knock out even those who read the trilogy and know it by heart. In order not to disappoint them, I am ready to become a creative producer of the film and to help create it, both with my advice and with my action. "
The novel and the game of Metro 2033 follow roughly the same scenario, so if you have already played the shooter, you will undoubtedly know some of the characters that will appear in the film, including the protagonist Artyom.
Glukhovsky said earlier this month that he was working on the next game in the series.
